Whispering Water

A dialogue between clay and water

Yanis Zagorianakos & Marina Coriolano-Lykourezos

For more than twenty years, Yanis and Marina have lived and worked alongside one another. In recent years, sharing the same studio, their practices have influenced and reshaped each other through a creative process that seeks to give form to matter.

The vessel appears as a central reference point in the research of this exhibition. Yet at its core lies not the vessel, nor clay or pigment, but water. The vessel becomes a metaphor for creation itself: a space that receives and transforms matter, where earth and water, clay and pigment take new form.

Vessels, born from earth and water, lose their last traces of moisture in the kiln in order to become objects that hold and receive water. This paradox lies at the heart of Marina’s practice: removing water in order to create space for water.

In Yanis’s work, water acts as a guide. It spreads, gathers within pigment, dissolves and reshapes itself across the canvas. From this fluid movement new forms emerge: flowers that never grew, creatures only suggested, faces that appear and fade.

What remains on the canvas is not simply an image but the trace of a process — a moment where movement, material, and chance converge. Within this space the viewer is invited to recognize, imagine, or discover something of their own.

Their practices reflect and complement one another. Between them unfolds a dialogue: clay and water, fire and pigment.

Whispering Water is their second joint exhibition — an ongoing conversation about how materials speak and how elements transform.
